Andriy Vorobey was a Ukrainian forward. He is one of the best goal-scorers in the history of Shakhtar Donetsk. He is included in the list of footballers who scored more than 100 goals in the Ukrainian Premier League. The footballer was born in Donetsk.
Andriy was attending Shakhtar Donetsk football academy during 8 years up to 1997 until he was included in the club’s first squad. In his first season Vorobey played 12 matches but did not manage to score a goal. His team was a runner-up at the championship.
During the following 1998/99 season the striker opened up proving to be a high scorer. In 18 matches of the national championship he scored 11 goals; in cup games he netted 2 more goals. Besides, Andriy appeared in 3 Eurocups.
However, the following three seasons appeared to be the most successful for the striker. In the 1999/00 season Vorobey improved his performance netting 15 goals in 28 games. In the 2000/01 season the young footballer distinguished himself by 21 goals in 24 matches of the championship which proved him to be the best goal-scorer in the Ukraine for that moment. At the same time he scored 6 goals in cup matches helping his team to win the Ukrainian Cup.
In the 2001/02 season the Ukrainian slowed down appearing in 37 matches and scoring 16 goals in all. Nevertheless he helped Shakhtar to become the Ukraine champion for the first time. As a result Vorobey ensured his status as the team’s leading striker; Hirnyky got one more trophy.
Andriy together with Shakhtar later won two more champion’s titles becoming holders of the third Ukrainian Cup in their career. Altogether the footballer played 319 games scoring 114 goals becoming one of Shakhtar’s best goal-scorers. Andriy’s career at the club from Donetsk was over by July 2007 when he transferred to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk for €2.5 million.
Vorobey continued scoring goals at Dnipro but his play was not that remarkable for his high scores as it used to be during Shakhtar period. In two seasons at Dnipropetrovsk club the player appeared in 54 matches netting 13 goals; after that he was released on a long-term loan to Arsenal Kyiv. The striker participated in 24 games and scored 9 goals. After the loan Andriy acquired the status of a free agent and resolved to transfer to Metalist Kharkiv signing a two-year contract.
In the 2010/11 season Andriy regularly appeared for Yellow-Blues scoring 4 goals in 29 matches including Eurocups. However in the following season lost his position going behind Jonathan Cristaldo and Taison. In the 2011/12 season Vorobey managed to feature in only games without scoring a goal. Before the beginning of the 2012/13 season the Ukrainian striker extended his contract up to the summer of 2013; however he was not included in the entry.
In 2013 Vorobey was loaned to Helios Kharkiv and later retired from professional football.
Andriy has great experience in appearing for the Ukrainian national team. Being its member he participated in 68 international games scoring 9 goals. He was included in the entry to 2006 FIFA World Cup that took place in Germany. At the tournament the player appeared in 4 matches; he took the field as a substitution in three of them; besides he played 94 minutes in the round of 8 match against Switzerland. Yellow-Blues progressed to the quarterfinals surrendering to the Italians.
