Andy O’Brien is an Irish defender currently playing for Canadian side Vancouver Whitecaps FC in the MLS. He was born on 29 June 1979 in Harrogate, England.
Andy was formed in the youth ranks of Leeds United and Bradford City. He turned professional with the latter club in 1996. He shortly became the first team regular and was an instrumental player during the 1998/99 season as his side finished second in the First Division and broke into the Premier League. In 2001, O’Brien transferred to Newcastle United. He proved decisive in the 2001/02 campaign as his team clinched a spot in the Champions League qualifiers. In between 2005 and 2012, O’Brien shone for Portsmouth, Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United. It was Bolton Wanderers club where the defender enjoyed his time most. In the summer 2012, O’Brien moved to Canada where he signed for Vancouver Whitecaps and plays for the team today.
Andy O’Brien was awarded 26 caps to the Republic of Ireland national team in between 2001 and 2006.
