After starting out at Reinickendorfer Füchse and Tennis Borussia Berlin, Ashkan Dejagah made a move to Hertha BSC in 2000, coming up through every youth level with that club. On 7 August 2004, being only 18-years old, he made his Bundesliga debut in the match against VfL Bochum subbing in five minutes from time.
During his first season at Hertha BSC, Ashkan appeared exclusively for the reserves, not having enough proficiency to perform in the first team. But after scoring 21 goals in 56 appearances for Hertha BSC II, Dejagah established himself as a top-flight footballer and joined the starting eleven for the next two seasons. Overall, he played 26 official matches for the club scoring, however, only one goal. And that was where he had to pay the price: he was forced to move to another club. In the end, in 2007 he found himself at Vfl Wolfsburg. Playing to his full capacity, Dejagah soon became a Bundesliga winner. Despite hepatitis, he was a top scorer of Wolfsburg contriving to play more than 20 games in a season. Overall, he scored 18 goals in 131 appearances for the German club.
From 2012 to 2014 the Iranian featured for a Premier League side Fulham. In the summer 2014 he switched for a Qatari side Al-Arabi.
On the national level a talented footballer had plenty of games for the German youth national teams which eventually led him to playing for Iran national team. However, due to numerous formalities concerning his background and citizenship, Dejagah couldn’t easily enjoy the Iranian squad. Only on 29 February 2012 he made a debut for Iran scoring a brace in a single match against Qatar.
