Beñat Extrebarria Urkiaga is a Spanish defensive midfielder currently playing for Athletic Bilbao.
This player was brought up at the prolific youth system of Athletic Bilbao. His first three years with the Basque side were spent in three different teams. At first he was a member of the club’s third team. A year later he moved to CD Baskonia and then spent two years for the reserve side of the Basque club named Bilbao Athletic. He spent only six minutes of a fixture against Osasuna when the midfielder substituted another young player Francisco Yeste.
During the season 2008/09 Beñat was sent on a year-long loan to the third division where he played for Conquence. As the loan spell expired Athletic released the player from his contract. Beñat was signed by Real Betis as a free transfer but his first season was spent playing for the B team.
On August 29, 2010, Extrebarria made his debut for the main squad playing the second half of a match against Granada. Throughout the season he made a remarkable personal record of 36 appearances with 30 starts and four goals. Owing to such a contribution the Andalusian side returned to the top flight.
On 2 May 2012, Beñat scored twice to gain a spectacular victory for his side against Sevilla in a local derby as the winning goal was scored on the last minute of that game. Throughout his career for the Verdiblancos Extrebarria was used by the manager in total of 71 La Liga and Segunda games in which the player scored 10 goals.
In 2013 Beñat completed a move to Athletic Bilbao.
Beñat was also capped for the national team two times during his career, four years after he received his last call-up from the youth national team.
