Benedikt Höwedes is a centre back and a captain of Schalke 04. He was born on 29 February 1988 in Haltern, Germany.
Benedikt was fostered in the Schalke academy since 2001. In 2006 he made his first encouraging achievement by clinching the title of the Under 19 Fußball-Bundesliga champion with his club.
January 2007 was marked by the signing of a professional contract with ‘The Miners’ till 2010. On 3 October 2007, the talented back got to the starting line-up of his team in the away Champions League match against Rosenborg Ballklub. Three days later he made his Bundesliga début in the game versus Karlsruher SC.
On 19 October 2008, Benedikt netted his first goal for Schalke 04 in the match against Hamburger SV and extended his contract with the club till 2014 in December the same year.
Höwedes took part in all matches and scored one goal in the 2009 European Youth Championship and the ‘DFB-Eleven’ strolled to the golden medals of the tournament. His first senior cap came on 29 May 2011 in the match against Uruguay, where he played during 24 minutes.
