When Benjamin was 6 he started his career as a footballer in the club of Normannia 08 Berlin, where he spent 7 years and then joined Reinickendorfer Füchse. In this squad he played for 4 years and after that was signed by FC Lübars. The latter was the last club of his junior career for the first senior contract with Hertha BSC was coming.
In Hertha Köhler spent three years that could hardly be called successful. Here he got only one appearance that happened in his team’s match against Eintracht Frankfurt in the 14th round of the 2000/2001 season. Benjamin was subsequently loaned to MSV Duisburg where he scored only once in 22 games. After that he returned to Hertha BSC, but his performance left a lot to be desired. Only in 2003, after his transfer to Rot-Weiss, Essen Köhler at last showed his paces. There he often found himself to be put on the position of an attacking midfielder. In that season Benjamin scored 13 goals. His results didn’t pass unheeded by the Second Bundesliga club of Eintracht Frankfurt that soon became his new place of employment.
He scored 7 goals in 29 matches in his first season and helped his club to be qualified for the Bundesliga. He also played six matches in the UEFA Cup 2006/2007. The season 2011/2012 can be considered the most successful in Benjamin’s Eintracht career. That year the midfielder made 9 scores in 11 games at a spell. In 2013 the player moved to Bundesliga 2 side Kaiserslautern and later on to Union Berlin.
