Benoît Cheyrou is a midfielder at Marseille. He was born on 3 May 1981 in Suresnes, France. Benoît’s youth career began in 1987 when he came to a tryout at Racing Paris academy. The player was accepted to the academy where he was being trained as well as took part in the youth team matches. In 1997 Lille scouts poached the young footballer who was attending the club’s academy during the following two years.
In 1999 Lille offered the young and talented midfielder to sign a professional contract. It was the first contract in his career. He signed a five-year contract with the club until 2004. During this time Benoit was occasionally featuring in the first squad as well as in reserve. Benoît Cheyrou played for his first club 100 matches scoring 2 goals.
In 2004 Cheyrou received an offer from Auxerre who wished to sign the player to a long-term contract. Benoît accepted the offer signing a three-year contract. The footballer immediately began being included in the club’s starting lineup; by the second season he became the core player of the first team. Benoit took the field 98 times scoring 6 goals.
In 2007 the most successful period in Benoit’s career started. Cheyrou was offered to transfer to Marseille. The club paid €5 million and signed him to a four-year contract. The head coach of the southern French club began including him in the starting lineup. During the time while he was playing for Marseille he became one of the core players of the first squad. Over five years of appearances for the club Benoit participated in more than 170 matches scoring 17 goals.
From 1999 to 2004 Benoît Cheyrou was invited to feature for the French youth national U-19 and U-21 teams 22 times and scored 1 goal.
