Benoît Costil plays in the goalkeeper position for Stade Rennais FC. He was born on 3 July 1987 in the city of Caen (France).
The player’s youth career started at Stade Malherbe Caen academy where he studied and performed for the club’s youth team.
In 2005 the goalkeeper was awarded a professional contract with Caen where he grew as a footballer. Benoît accepted the offer and in the summer of 2005 joined French club. However there was no place for him in the major squad so he performed only as a substitute rarely appearing in the first team. For three years spent in the club he featured in 10 club matches.
In 2008 Costil did not show up in a single match and in order not to lose playing skills he was given out on loan. Vannes from Ligue 2 became his new temporary club. He performed a role of the first goalkeeper but periodically swapped around with a second-choice goalkeeper. During the 2008/09 season he starred in 27 club matches.
In 2009 Benoît received a call-up from Sedan which offered him a position of the first-choice goalkeeper. He willingly accepted the offer that enabled him to obtain necessary playing experience and continue his development. In two seasons he became the main goalkeeper participating in 76 club matches.
Excelling performances of a gifted goalkeeper caught the eye of Rennes from Ligue 1. The club’s management made a decision to get hold of the player. In the summer of 2011 Costil signed a long-term contract with Rennes in accordance with which he currently represents the club.
In 2008 the goalkeeper twice played for the France national U-21 football team.
