Bernd Nehrig started to play football as a goalkeeper of his hometown club TV Steinheim. In 1998 he joined the youth ranks of VfB Stuttgart as an outfield player. After 7 years at the club Bernd won the credit of confidence and was offered to sign a professional contract in 2005. Initially he competed for the reserve team delivering 18 goals in 39 appearances, and in 2006 was promoted to the senior squad.
However, the young footballer was soon loaned out to SpVgg Unterhaching since he had missed a year of practice through an injury. He made only 3 appearances for the first team and transferred to SpVgg Greuther Fürth in the summer of 2007 signing a contract until 2010. Nehrig opened his account with Greuther Fürth in the match against SV Darmstadt 98. During that season the defender netted 6 goals. Despite his position, the player scored goals quite often, and it was he who fired the winning goal against his former club VfB Stuttgart during the 2011 DFB-Pokal. In total, Bernd had earned 162 appearances delivering 29 goals for Greuther Fürth before joining St. Pauli in May 2013.
Nehrig was capped at all youth levels of the German national team, starting from the U-16 in 2001. In April 2012 the contract with Cloverleaves was extended until 30 June 2014.
