Carles Puyol is a legendary former defender and captain of FC Barcelona. He was born on April 13, 1978 in La Pobla de Segur, Spain.
Puyol’s youth career began in his hometown, at Pobla de Segur C.F. In 1993-1995, Carles was educated at the club academy as well as played for the youth team taking part in several championships. In 1995, Puyol was offered to join the FC Barcelona academy which he gladly did and practiced there till 1996.
In 1996, Carles joined Barcelona’s third team where he played for a year. Next year the club management saw Puyol’s progress and took him to Barcelona’s second team. Carles was one of the main defenders, took part in almost every match of the reserve team. In 1997-2000, Puyol played 89 matches for the reserve team and scored 6 goals.
In 1999, Carles got a chance to make his debut in Barcelona’s main squad. Having played a good match, he returned to the reserve team but not for a long time. Already in 2000 he was offered to join the firs team. An opportunity to become one of the key team players actually was within reach. It all depended only on Puyol’s desire which was his motivation throughout the whole club career. After his first season with FC Barcelona Carles became a frequent member of the main squad. And already in the 2003/04 season he became the team’s captain. From 1999 to 2014 Carles played around 700 matches for FC Barcelona, scored 24 goals and won numerous trophies with the club. In 2014 he retired from professional football.
In 1995-2000, Carles Puyol was invited 12 times to play for youth teams ranging from U-18 to U-23. From 2000 to 2014 Carles was a main defender of the Spain national team.
