Cenk drew his first breath in the city of Izmir, Turkey. He first played football in his home town as a child and later participated in numerous competitions between local and regional teams. His first youth club was Göztepe, where he spent 5 years. He is by the way a nephew to the club’s former goalkeeper Ali Artuner.
In 2004 Cenk made the first step of his professional career at the club. In 2006 the goalie was signed by Denizlispor. At the beginning of 2008 Gönen was sent on loan to second-tier Turkish club Altay in order to gain playing experience. At the end of 2008 the player returned to Denizlispor and stayed there up to 2010. Later he was sold to Beşiktaş for one million Euro and signed 5-year contract with the club, where he is wearing the number 99 shirt.
Cenk made his first international appearance on 10 Febuary 2009 in the match against Ukraine.
