Cheng Liang is a retired Chinese defender. He was born on March 3, 1977 in Shanghai, China.
The footballer started out at the youth team of Shanghai Shenhua in 1995. But due to high competition and lack of experience he failed to break in the main set-up. So in 1998 Cheng Liang left the club and joined Shanghai Pudong where he was handed his first full-time contract. Being a valuable squad member, the defender featured 88 times and netted 7 goals. In 2005 he headed back to Shanghai Shenhua. On April 5, 2005 Cheng Liang made his first appearance for the club in a 2-0 victory over Qingdao Zhongneng. Owing to his versatility the footballer was required to fill in at the centre of defense on many occasions. At the start of the 2009 campaign he was installed as a team’s captain and as an assistant manager. In 2010 Miroslav Blažević was brought in to manage the club. The new coach decided to loan out Cheng Liang to Shenzhen Ruby in the summer transfer window. The player appeared 6 times there.
Cheng Liang retired at the age of 36.
Aged 32, Cheng Liang won five caps for the China national team in 2009. His international debut came on May 29, 2009 when China faced Germany.
