Chinedu Obasi is a Nigerian forward of Schalke 04 and the national team.
Chinedu began his career in three Nigerian side clubs: River Lane Youth Club Enugu, Enugu Rangers and JC Raiders, playing for them in youth. At the age of 18, Chinedu moved to Norwegian side Lyn, where he performed along with his compatriot John Obi Mikel. Later two of them got on the list of Chelsea’s interest, but the London club bought only Mikel. Obasi stayed in Norway and soon drew attention of several English and Russian teams, including Liverpool, Arsenal, Lokomotiv, CSKA, etc.
In the winter of 2006 Chinedu was on the point of transferring to Lokomotiv Moscow and the two clubs had already agreed on the terms of signing, the footballer was going to move, but the deal fell through due to several grand changes in the Lokomotiv management.
On 27 August 2007, Obasi went to Germany after being bought by 1899 Hoffenheim for about €5 million. That was one of the most expensive signings in the history of the 2. Bundesliga. On 3 September 2007, Chinedu made his début for the new club in the match against Freiburg. He managed to contribute two goals, which did not help his team in a 2-3 loss though. In December 2009 Obasi signed a new contract with the club till 2014.
On 24 December 2011, the footballer moved to Schalke 04 on a six-month loan deal with the right of further redemption. On 27 March 2012, the German club bought the Nigerian striker and offered him a contract till 2015.
Chinedu was several times promoted to the starting line-up of his national team at different international levels, starting from the youth squad and ending with the full one.
In 2001 he and his peers took second place in the World Youth Championship. In 2005 Obasi repeated his achievement at U-20 level. In 2008 Chinedu was a runner-up again, this time at the Summer Olympics in Beijing. In 2010 the footballer took part in the African Nations Cup and picked up the bronze medal. The same year Obasi represented his country in the World Cup.
The striker was chosen the best young player of the Norwegian Premier League in 2006.
