Christian Maggio

Christian Maggio is a wing back for Napoli. He was born on 11 February 1982 in Montecchio Maggiore, Italy.

Christian’s youth career started at Vicenza youth academy where he studied and played with the youth teams for 3 years.

In 2000 Christian graduated from Vicenza youth academy and joined his alma mater senior squad after signing his first professional contract. During 3 years at Vicenza the young defender made only 38 appearances and failed to become a key player.

In 2003 Maggio attracted the attention of Fiorentina that liked the young defender’s performance. Christian wanted to play in Italian Serie A and gladly accepted Fiorentina’s offer. In the summer of 2003 Maggio joined the club’s first squad and played with the Lilies for 4 years. During the initial two and a half seasons Maggio was often included in the club’s starting lineup scoring 2 goals in 56 matches. Due to scarce performances in 2006 Fiorentina management decided to loan Maggio.

In 2006 Christian joined Treviso for half a season with a total of 11 matches.

After returning from Treviso Maggio continued his career at Sampdoria on loan. From 2006 to 2007 Christian Maggio played 31 matches and netted 2 goals for Sampdoria. Christian’s confident play convinced the Blue-ringed to sign a permanent contract with the defender. The 2007/08 season was a success for Maggio as he scored 9 goals in 29 matches.

Christian’s bright performance caught the eye of Napoli and in 2008 the club purchased the young defender from Sampdoria for €8 million and signed a long-term contract with him. At present Christian successfully plays for Napoli with 16 goals in 123 appearances so far.

Christian Maggio helped Napoli to win Coppa Italia in the 2011/12 season. From 2000 to 2002 Maggio played for the Italian U-18, U-20 and U-21 teams totaling 31 games and 4 goals. Since 2008 Christian has been called up to represent the Italy national team with 19 caps so far.
