Christian Wetklo

Christian Wetklo was born on 11 January 1980 in Marl, which is situated in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In his early career Christian played as a goalkeeper for DJK Armina Hassel and SC Hassel. He concluded his youth career in 1995, when he moved to Schalke 04. In 1999, the player moved to Rot-Weiss Essen, where he stayed for a year and did not appear in a single match. Later the player joined Mainz, in which Wetklo first played for an amateur club, being the second goalkeeper. In the summer of 2002, he made his professional debut. But he didn’t manage to perform in the second Bundesliga.

However, in the second half of the 2004/2005 season, he substituted the main goalkeeper of the club, so he succeeded in appearing in a few matches. The following season he sustained an injury, and therefore stopped playing. Having recovered Christian joined the reserve team, where he played a total of 115 matches. At the end of October 2011, Wetklo appeared on the pitch in the second round of the German Cup, in which Mainz beat Hannover 96. It is worth noting that in his youth, Christian performed as a forward for some time, it made him very fast in a straight line, so he is good at coming out of the goal.

At the national level Wetklo played six matches for the German U-18 team in the period from 1996 to 1998. He hasn’t played in the other teams.
