Clemens Fritz started playing football at the Rot-Weiß Erfurt youth system. After the club had run into financial difficulties, the young player had to look for a new club. So, Clemens joined VfB Leipzig for a while, but soon the situation with his first club improved and Fritz returned to Rot-Weiß Erfurt. There the player finished his youth career and made a comeback with Leipzig. The young German made 6 appearances for the team and in 1999 returned again to Rot-Weiß, now, for the last time. Clemens spent a fruitful season with the club, firing 14 goals in 57 matches. Soon afterwards Fritz, together with his teammate Marco Engelhardt, moved to the second division Karlsruher SC. He delivered only 7 goals in 61 games, but managed to become a regular, which drew the attention of the German giants Bayer Leverkusen.
During three years with Lions, Clemens played 43 matches, trying to compete with many players. His debut was delayed because of the fibula injury, which kept him off the pitch for the whole season. The footballer debuted for Bayer Leverkusen only on 9 March 2005 in the Champions League match against Liverpool, when he spent about 40 minutes on the pitch.
In the summer of 2006 Fritz signed a contract with Werder Bremen, running until 2009. He immediately became the key right-back for the main team, and then extended his contract with the club until 2012. During the 2011/12 season Clemens put on the captain’s armband, performing as a midfielder from time to time. The contract with Werder was extended until 2014.
Clemens Fritz played 22 matches for the Germany national team, including several games during Euro 2008.
