He was groomed at Sportul Studenţesc youth system for five years before joining the first team of the club in 1999. Beginning from the 2000/01 season, Costin regularly appeared in the starting eleven amassing 157 league appearances and 11 goals for a seven-year stint with Sportul. In 2006, Lazăr moved to Rapid Bucureşti where he made a total of 134 appearances and 9 goals for a five-year stint.
In the summer 2011, the Romanian player signed for the Greek side PAOK and broke into the starting eleven already after five successful matches for the club. In March 2012, Lazăr scored a superb brace in a 4-0 win over Kerkyra. In the summer 2014 the player was released from PAOK.
Costin Lazăr is a regular international for Romania since 2005. As of November 2012, he earned 23 caps to the national squad since then.
