Ionuţ Cristian Săpunaru was born in 1984 in Bucharest, Romania. Currently he plays for Elche as a right defender.
A Romanian footballer graduated from FC Naţional Bucureşti’s youth ranks, where he went on his senior career since 2002. The season 2003/04 he was loaned to FC Callatis Mangalia.
In July 2006 Săpunaru left FC Naţional Bucureşti for FC Rapid Bucureşti. Two seasons later a Romanian footballer clinched a five-year deal with FC Porto for a fee of €2.5 million. Săpunaru scored his first Taça da Liga goal in a 1–2 defeat to CD Nacional.
Săpunaru returned to his native FC Rapid Bucureşti for half-a-year loan, as he had been suspended in Portugal. When Săpunaru returned back to Porto he helped them to win UEFA Europa League, the Taça da Liga and Portuguese League.
In August 2012, Săpunaru moved to Spain, signing a one-year deal with Real Zaragoza. One year later he completed a move to newly promoted side Elche.
Cristian Săpunaru is a part of the Romania national team. He made his international debut in the match against Montenegro and was a part of the squad at UEFA Euro 2008, but didn’t feature in the finals.
