Cristián Zapata is a Colombian footballer currently playing as a defender for Italian top-flight club Milan. He was born on 30 September 1986 in Padilla, Colombia.
Groomed at a Colombian top club Deportivo Cali, Cristián was promoted to the first team of his parent club in 2004. He made a fine start of his professional career amassing 25 appearances for a season-long spell at the club.
In 2005, Zapata enjoyed a meteoric rise moving to Europe to join the Italian side Udinese. A skillful defender shortly established himself as a key player of the team amassing all in all 168 games and 5 goals for six seasons at the club.
Ahead of the 2011/12 season, many top European clubs expressed their interest in Zapata. Eventually, Colombian footballer opted for Villarreal CF. However, having played only 36 games for the Spanish club, he was loaned to the Italian giant AC Milan for the 2012/13 campaign. Zapata became a solid centre back for the Rossoneri and at the end of the season they bought out his contract from Villarreal for €6m.
Cristián Zapata has been called up to the Colombia national team since 2007.
