David Albelda Aliquéz is a legendary Spanish footballer who played a defensive halfback for Valencia CF.
At first his position on the pitch was one of central defender.
The early stage of his career wasn’t that successful. In 1998 he went on loan to Villarreal and after coming back to Valencia he broke his leg.
The real breakthrough in his play could be noticed in 2001. He delivered brilliant football under Héctor Cúper’s management in the Champions League. David even earned captainship of his squad right after Gaizka Mendieta left in 2002.
He made his biggest contribution to the development of Valencia when Rafael Benitez came to be the manager of the squad. Three seasons was enough for the Bats to triumph twice in La Liga and the UEFA Cup.
The year 2007 was marked by Ronald Koeman’s management who dismissed several footballers including David from the starting 11 and when David came back to the squad the club was crashed by Barcelona 6-0. Nevertheless they managed to keep the team away from the bottom of the table.
At the end of 2012/2013 season the club did not renew Albelda’s contract who had played 351 matches by that time.
