Davide Somma

Davide Enrico Somma is a South African striker. He was born on 26 March 1985 in Johannesburg, South Africa.

When Davide was 12, his family moved to Florida, United States, and the boy started his career in the academy of Tyler Apaches.

In 2004, the footballer joined the youth system of Spanish side Logroñés and was given a chance to make a senior start in a European club due to his Italian passport.

The same year, Somma penned his first professional four-year contract with Italian side Perugia, but failed to make any appearances for the team. Six months later, ‘Grifoni’ became insolvent and let the striker move to Pro Vasto, where he took part in 39 fixtures and netted two goals during two years. In 2007, Davide transferred to Olbia and fired one goal in 15 games for the club during one season.

In 2008, the footballer returned to the USA and sealed a deal with San Jose Earthquakes, where he featured in four matches during one year.

In September 2009, Somma put pen to paper of a contract with English side Leeds United and was asked to join the reserve squad, where he scored two goals. The striker’s first appearance for the main team ended in the injury, which kept him out of action till November.

On 26 November 2009, Davide finalized a season-long loan move to Chesterfield, but took part only in three games for the club during his spell. In February 2010, the footballer was sent on loan to Lincoln City, where he showed stellar performance and amassed nine goals in 14 matches.

After his temporary contract expired, Somma returned to Leeds United, but got a serious trauma in July 2011. It took the striker six months to recover and make impressing display, as he scored 13 goals in 34 fixtures for ‘The Peacocks’. In the summer 2013 Somma was released from the club.

From 2010, Davide has been capped three times and contributed one goal for the South Africa national squad.
