Dejan Stanković is a Serbian midfielder. He was born on 9 September 1978 in Belgrade, Serbia.
Dejan’s youth career started in the youth system of Red Star Belgrade. In 1994 Dejan was promoted to the club’s senior squad.
At first the head coach didn’t allow Dejan to start matches too often waiting for him to get in shape. During his second season at Red Star Belgrade Stanković was periodically included in the starting eleven. By 1998 Dejan’s personal standing at the Belgrade club was 30 goals in 85 matches.
The Serb’s performance attracted attention of Serie A Lazio and in 1998 the Italian club purchased Stanković for £7.5 million. From the beginning of his debut season at Lazio Dejan was made regular and played in the club’s important matches. By 2004 the Serbian midfielder scored 22 goals in 137 matches for the Biancazzurri.
In 2004 Dejan caught the eye of Internazionale which at the time was in the process of squad rejuvenation and searched for a new perspective half-back. The transfer fee amounted to £4 million. Stanković signed a long-term contract with the Italian club and has been playing for nerazzurri ever since, always remaining a key player for Inter. The Serbian midfielder’s experience and professionalism made him popular and valued among the coaching staff and facilitated his regular appearances in the Italian Serie A during 9 years with Inter. Since 2004 Dejan Stanković made 321 appearances and scored 41 goals for La Beneamata. In 2013 the player was released form the club.
Dejan Stanković was named the Serbian Player of the Year in 2006 and 2010. From 1998 to 2011 Stanković was capped 102 times and scored 15 goals for Serbia.
