Diego Benaglio began his football grooming in Grasshopper Club Zürich and made his senior debut for the club in 1999.
In 2002 a Swiss footballer signed a contract with VfB Stuttgart, but during his 3-year stint in the club Diego was never to appear in the first team but played exclusively for the reserves at VfB Stuttgart II.
In 2005 he signed a contract with Portugal's C.D. Nacional but after three brilliant seasons there Benaglio left the Madeirans for VfL Wolfsburg who signed a promising goalkeeper until 2012. On 28 April 2012 the contract was extended till 2017.
In 2006 Diego Benaglio was called-up for the 2006 FIFA World Cup as a third-choice goalkeeper of the Switzerland national football team. In 2008 and 2010 he earned international caps again but already as a first-choice.
