Diego Lugano was born in Uruguay.
The player’s professional football career started at São Paulo FC in 2003. In 2005 as a member of São Paulo team Diego was recognized as the best footballer in South America. The defender helped his team to acquire the titles in the FIFA Club World Championship and the Copa Libertadores.
Lugano received calls-up from numerous Spanish, English and Italian clubs but he made a decision to stay at São Paulo FC. With Diego the team won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A and approached the Copa Libertadores final.
On August 2006 the footballer was contracted by Fenerbahçe SK a football club from Istanbul. Almost at once he gained Süper Lig title (in 2007 and 2011). In the summer of 2011 the team was suspected of match fixing and thus was excluded from the UEFA Champions League.
On 27 August 2011 Diego Lugano agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain FC for €4 million per year. Nevertheless, he did not have any practice since the arrival of Carlo Ancelotti and was sent on loan to Spanish side Malaga for the second half of 2012/2013 season.
Upon his return from Malaga Lugano signed a permanent deal with West Bromwich Albion. In 2014 he was released from the club.
