Diego Pérez is a defensive midfielder for Bologna. He was born on 18 May 1990 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Pérez began his professional career at the age of 19. Diego signed his first contract with Uruguayan Defensor Sporting and played for the club from 1999 to 2003.
In 2003 Pérez joined one of the most titled clubs in the world – Peñarol. Although the 2003/04 season wasn’t especially successful for the young player as he scored only 2 goals in 13 appearances.
In 2004 Diego joined Monaco on a permanent contract. During his debut season at Monaco though Diego Pérez had to compete with other midfielders and made practically no appearances. Only since the 2005/06 season Diego became a regular in the starting lineup. Diego played for Monaco until 2010. During that time the Uruguayan midfielder made 181 appearances and although scored only 2 goals was considered one of the best defensive midfielders at The Red and Whites.
In the middle of 2010 Diego joined his current Bologna.
Since 2001 Diego Pérez is called up to play for Uruguay. At present he has 49 caps and 1 goal for Uruguay and is considered one of the most experienced players in the team. As part of Uruguay national team, Diego Pérez played at Copa América in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2011 and at FIFA World Cup in 2010.
