Eduardo Alves da Silva is a Croatian striker of Brazilian origin, born on 25 February 1983 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Eduardo’s career started at the youth team of local CBF Nova Kennedy. At the age of 15 Eduardo’s family moved to Croatia, where he continued to play football at the football academy of Dinamo Zagreb. In 1998 Eduardo returned to Brazil to train at Bangu, but then returned to Croatia in 2000. And after a while, in 2001, the striker signed his first professional contract with Dinamo, and debuted for the club in September of that same year.
Eduardo was loaned to Inter Zaprešić for the 2002/03 season. There the striker played 15 matches and scored 10 goals, before returning to Dinamo as an experienced player, ready for serious challenge. Already in the 2003/04 season Eduardo scored 9 goals in 24 matches and helped his club to become the Croatian championships. In addition, in 2004 the player was called up to the Croatia national team. In the following season the Croatian player improved his performance, and scored 10 goals in 21 matches, but his full potential revealed in the next two seasons. In the 2005/06 season Eduardo netted 20 goals in 27 matches, making Dinamo the Croatian champions. In 2006 Eduardo was named The Best Player of the Croatian Championship. Da Silva’s best season at Dinamo was 2006/07, as he managed an outstanding 34 goals in 32 matches, scoring an average of more than one goal per game. That season Eduardo became threefold champion, as Dinamo won Croatian Prva HNL, Croatian Cup and Super Cup.
On 3 July 2007 the Brazilian officially joined London Arsenal F.C., which paid Dinamo £7.5 million for the transfer. Six weeks later, on 19 August 2007, Eduardo debuted for the Gunners in a draw against Blackburn Rovers. 10 days later he netted his first goal for London club, hitting the back of the net of Sparta Prague. By late 2007 the Croatian striker gained a foothold in the first team of Arsenal.
On 23 February 2008 Eduardo was severely injured in a match against Birmingham. The Croatian was diagnosed with an open leg fracture. His full recovery took a whole year. Eduardo returned to Arsenal on 16 February 2009 in 1/16 of the FA Cup against Cardiff. The forward made a bright comeback by managing a double. However, da Silva returned to the Premier League only at the beginning of the 2009/10 season, taking part in a smashing 6-1 victory over Everton. On 18 November, 2009 Eduardo extended his contract with Arsenal, but nine months later, on 21 July 2010, he joined Shakhtar Donetsk.
Eduardo penned a four-year deal with The Miners and was given number 11 shirt. On 7 August Eduardo played his first match for the new club against Sevastopol. The Miners then won 5-0, and Shakhtar head coach Mircea Lucescu was very pleased with Eduardo’s debut.
On 21 August 2010 Eduardo scored his first goal for Shakhtar in an away match against Volyn Lutsk. One of the main achievements of the Croatian player at the Donetsk club were three goals in two matches against Dynamo Kyiv, which is the principal rival of The Miners. First, in the 2011 Ukrainian Cup finals he helped his team beat The White-Blues 2-0 and become the champions. Then in the 1/8 round of the 2012 Ukrainian Cup the Brazilian striker hit the back of Dinamo’s net twice and thus contributed to Shakhtar’s winning another championship title.
After four successful years with Shakhtar, Eduardo moved to Flamengo in the summer 2014.
From 2004 to 2014 Eduardo da Silva played for the national team of Croatia, made 64 appearances and netted 29 goals.
