Eric Cantona is retired French striker born on 24 May 1966 in Marseille, France.
Eric started out his professional career with Auxerre in 1983. He initially was given little playing time at the club and in the 1986/87 season Cantona became a regular in the starting lineup. He turned to be a big asset for the team with his 13 goals in 36 matches throughout the season. However, Cantona began to reveal bad features of his character: he produced poor disciplinary record. He is notorious for punching teammate in the face. In 1989, Cantona furiously kicked the ball in the crowd and then tore his shirt for being sent off. Few months later, the Frenchman was ruled out from international competitions for insulting the national coach on TV.
Despite bad discipline, Cantona served instrumental on the field. In 1992, he was signed by the English club Manchester United. The French forward became a vital player for the team as he led the Red Devils to their first Premier League title since 1967. He recorded another three league titles and two FA Cups during his five-year spell at the club. For his outstanding performances Cantona got the nickname ‘King Eric’ among Manchester United fans. Overall, he scored 64 goals in 143 league matches for the club. Nevertheless, Cantona got ill fame for assaulting on fan in 1995, the act for which he got a long ban from football.
In between 1987 and 1995, Cantona earned 45 caps to the France national team.
