Hoffer started his career at SC Haidhof in 1994. After that he played in several more junior squads as FC Tribuswinkel, Badener AC and Admira Wacker. And it was the latter one where he signed his first contract as a senior footballer and played for two years (2004-2006) on the professional level. There he also got his nickname ‘Jimmy’ that refers to Jimmy ‘The Tulip’ from ‘The Whole Nine Yards’ film. He acquired this alias mostly for the equanimity he demonstrates while scoring goals. On his reserve side account he had 27 scores in 53 matches. Though in the first team squad where he played since 2004 his effectiveness noticeably decreased and this was the reason for him to be transferred to Rapid Vienna.
There he was able not only to score 11 in his eleven appearances for the reserve squad, but also to make 41 goals in 85 matches for the first eleven. Due to this very fact Erwin was soon recruited by Napoli that subsequently loaned him to FC Kaiserslautern in 2010. In 2011 Hoffer joined Eintracht Frankfurt and stayed there till 2013 when he rejoined Kaiserslautern.
In August 2013 Hoffer joined Fortuna Dusseldorf on permanent basis.
As an international Erwin Hoffer can also boast rather noteworthy figures. He scored in every second match of the youth teams he played at. And in 2007 he was capped by the Austrian national football team. Over the five years as a national squad player he was fielded in 28 matches and scored 4 goals.
