Federico Fernández is a defender for Napoli. He was born on February 21 1989 in Tres Algarrobos, Argentina.
Federico studied at Estudiantes youth academy. He played his Apertura debut match in September 2008 in a 1-0 win against Vélez Sársfield. By the end of the year Fernández was made a regular at Estudiantes as the team made their way right to the finals of Copa Libertadores in 2009. During the tournament Federico featured only twice as a substitute.
In January 2009 Fernández played for the Argentinean U-20 team in Copa América.
Federico scored his first goal in May 2009 during Argentina Clausura in the match against Lanús after a pass from Juan Sebastián Verón. A little later Estudiantes won Copa Libertadores. During the championship Federico made 2 appearances in quarterfinal matches against Defensor Sporting Club.
In December 2010 Napoli bought Fernández from Estudiantes for €3 million. Still for a long time the deal has been suspended as the Argentine didn’t have European Union passport. Federico finally joined Napoli in 2011 after Italian Football Federation increased the limit of non-EU players to 2. In 2013 the player was sent on loan to Getafe.
In 2009 Federico played for the Argentine U-20 team twice. Since 2011 Federico Fernández has been called up to play for the Argentina national team with the total of 2 goals in 16 appearances so far.
