François Affolter was born on 13 March 1991 in Biel, Switzerland.
Affolter’s junior career took off in the academy of FC Etoile Biel. In 2001 François joined FC Biel-Bienne and played there till 2007. That year one of the best Swiss clubs BSC Young Boys welcomed Affolter into the fold. He had spent one year at youth level until was promoted to the first team. His professional debut came on 14 September 2008 in the away match against AC Bellinzona. François debuted in the UEFA Cup on 2 October 2008 in a 0-2 defeat to FC Brügge, spending the whole match on the pitch. The footballer played a total of 94 games for BSC Young Boys.
On 24 January 2012 the Swiss was loaned to Werder Bremen. The defender made his first line-up start on 28 January in the 19th Bundesliga round against Bayer 04 Leverkusen.
At the beginning of 2014 Affolter switched for another Swiss club Luzern.
François made his international debut in 2009. He was capped 3 times for the Swiss U-19 team and 12 times for the U-21 squad. His first senior cap came in August 2010 in the match against Austria. In May 2011 Affolter played for the U-21 team in the match against Denmark, and thereafter was no longer capped due to a thigh injury.
