Freddy Adu is an American footballer of Ghanaian descent born on 2 June 1989 in Tema, Ghana. He currently plays as a midfielder for Philadelphia Union in MLS.
Freddy began his youth career at IMG Academy in 2002. At the age of 14, he signed his first professional contract with D.C. United setting up a record as the youngest American player to sign a professional contract in any team sport. In 2004, he helped the club to win the MLS Cup.
Adu spent a half of the 2007 season at Real Salt Lake and in July 2007 moved to Portugal to join Benfica. In between 2008 and 2011, he played on loan for such clubs as AS Monaco, Belenenses, Aris and Çaykur Rizespor amassing 32 appearances in total. In the summer 2011, Adu joined Philadelphia Union in MLS.
Freddy Adu got a first taste of international action playing for the United States U17 team in the 2002/03 season and amassing 16 goals in 15 matches. Since 2006, he is capped to the senior American side.
