Gabriel Melkam is a Nigerian footballer, born on 13 March 1980 in Lagos, Nigeria.
After finishing the youth football academy of FC Stationery Stores in 1996, the player joined the Nigeria Premier League side FC Kwara United. Gabriel spent the first two seasons of his professional career with this club, before moving to FC Wattenscheid 09 in 1998. Soon he managed to establish himself as an important first-team member with the German side, being mostly used as a defender and sporadically playing in a left-midfielder position. Such versatility helped him to earn 85 appearances and score 12 goals before he left the club in 2001.
His next destination was another German club FC Karlsruher, where he once again managed to impress the club’s head coach and earned regular first-team football. Altogether he scored 4 goals in 56 matches during his 2 seasons with the side. In 2003 the player joined the illustrious FC Hansa Rostock, but failed to break through into the starting XI and left the club two seasons later after just 19 appearances and 1 goal in a shirt of the Rostok club. In 2005 Melkam was transferred to the lower division side FC Sportfreunde Siegen, where his football career got back on track, as he added 27 appearances and 1 goal to his career stats during his only season at the club.
In the summer of 2006 the footballer moved to China, where he clinched a deal with FC Xiamen Lanshi, starting another successful chapter of his career. During his season with the Xiamen side, he made 38 first-team appearances. Later Melkam continued to make his name in the Chinese championship, moving to another Chinese Super League side FC Changchun Yatai. After 4 goals and 44 appearances throughout his two seasons at the club, he moved to FC Guangzhou Evergrande (1 goal/18 appearances) for the 2010 season, before finally signed a contract with FC Qingdao Jonoon in 2011.
In the international arena, the player represented his national side at the U20 level in 1999.
