The second-string line-up proved too strong for Arsene Wenger, who fielded his best guard except dropping Mesut Ozil, Olivier Giroud and Bacary Sagna. However, it is arguably the absence of suspended Mikel Arteta and injured Mathieu Flamini that made the difference as the home side were unable to deal with some of the deadly attacking attempts. Cesar Azpilicueta opened the scoring on 25 minutes after a brutal mistake from Carl Jenkinson and Juan Mata killed the game off on 66 minutes with a clinical strike just from outside the box. Another trophy blow for Arsene Wenger and a worrying performance at the sight of the match against Liverpool this weekend.

Manchester United finally managed to claim a comfortable win against lacklustre Norwich City courtesy of two goals from Javier Hernandez, a volley from Phil Jones and an injury time effort from Fabio. David Moyes won three straight home matches inside one week and looks forward to an away game against Fulham.

West Ham go on at the cost of Burnley courtesy of two late penalty strikes from Matt Taylor and Jack Collison.

Leicester City are the only non-Premier League side staying in the tournament after a hard-fought win over Fulham. Lloyd Dyer’s late goal saved Nigel Pearson’s side from extra time on an entertaining night as Morgan, Wood and Miquel netted for the hosts and Rodallega twice and veteran Karagounis hitted the back of the net for The Cottagers.

Birmingham City and Stoke City played a thriller at St. Andrew’s Stadium. Assaidi opened the scoring for Stoke 10 minutes into the game. Adeyemi equalized before The Blues’ midfielder Elliott was sent off for just before the break. Crouch and Arnautovic capitalized on that as the game continued in the second half but Lovenkrands scored two late goals to put the match to extra time. Jones gave Stoke the lead one more time just to see Lee level once again two minutes before the end. Three fantastic comebacks from Birmingham City did not prevent them from losing the match on penalties later on.

Two fxtures, including the likes of Tottenham, Hull, Newcastle and Manchester City will be played on Wednesday, while the clash between Sunderland and Southampton is scheduled for 6 November.

Wed, 30 Oct 2013 08:08:38 +0000 Leon Smolski 221480 at http://www.footballtop.com http://www.footballtop.com/news/chelsea-and-manchester-united-are-through-capital-one-cup-quarterfinals#comments Chelsea Cole and Cahill set to feature in the Europa league clash against Basel http://www.footballtop.com/news/chelsea-cole-and-cahill-set-feature-europa-league-clash-against-basel

Chelsea’s chances of reaching Europa League final have been given a huge boost with the news their defensive duo Gary Cahill and Ashley Cole have returned to full fitness following their recovery from injuries.

Left back Ashley Cole has sustained a hamstring strain during FA Cup quarter-final replay 2-1 victory over Manchester United, while Cahill underwent a minor surgery on his knee injury.

Both players flew to Switzerland to take part in the training session ahead of the Europa League semi-final first leg and are likely to be included in the starting line-up by the interim Rafa Benitez.

Oscar, who limped off during Sunday’s 2-2 Premier League draw with Liverpool with a damaged groin, will likely feature in the first XI.

Wed, 24 Apr 2013 11:04:59 +0000 Basil Naumov 142097 at http://www.footballtop.com http://www.footballtop.com/news/chelsea-cole-and-cahill-set-feature-europa-league-clash-against-basel#comments Chelsea Cahill set to miss two more weeks http://www.footballtop.com/news/chelsea-cahill-set-miss-two-more-weeks

Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez revealed centre-back Gary Cahill has undergone a surgery on his knee at the end of March.

Cahill has been on the sidelines since picking up a knee injury during the Blues 2-0 win over West Ham on the 17th of March.
