Gary Robert Caldwell is a captain of Wigan Athletic and plays at the position of a back, but is also capable of operating as a defensive midfielder. He was born on 12 April 1982 in Stirling, Scotland.
Caldwell's career took off in the youth team of Celtic Boys Club. At the age of 16, the footballer and his brother Steven moved to England, where Gary began to perform for the reserve team of Newcastle United. The back did not manage to clinch a place in the main team and spent three seasons on loan in Darlington, Hibernian, Coventry City and Derby County.
In 2004 Gary became a free agent and returned to Hibernian. In the summer 2006, the footballer penned a contract with Celtic and spent four years there before sealing a deal with Wigan Athletic. At the beginning of the 2010/2011 season, Caldwell was voted the captain of the team.
Gary’s full international début came in 2002. Two years later, the back contributed his first goal for the Scotland national squad. All in all Caldwell was capped 51 times and fired two goals for his senior national team.
