Gennaro’s career started in 1990 in A.C. Perugia Calcio youth academy. For 5 years Gennaro successfully performed in the Perugia youth team, simultaneously studying football tactics at the club’s academy.
After 5 years of brilliant and confident play with Perugia youth team, Gennaro was offered a contract with A.C. Perugia Calcio. Gattuso signed his first professional contract in the summer 1995. After the transition to the first team of the club, he was rarely put on the starting lineup, having played only 10 games in two years.
Gennaro possessed talent, aspired to progress and in 1997 signed a long-term contract with Rangers F.C. But his stay in the Scottish club wasn’t long, because after the successful 1997/98 season he started receiving offers from Italian clubs. During the 1997/98 season Gattuso played 34 matches for Rangers F.C. and scored 5 goals.
In 1998 Gennaro returned to Italy after signing a contract with Salernitana. In the following season Gattuso played 25 matches in the championship. It got him the attention of A.C. Milan management. Milan liked Gattuso so much that they were ready to pay a handsome sum for his transfer. Gennaro accepted Milan’s offer and terminated his contract with the tiny club. A.C. Milan became a turning point in Gennaro’s career. For many years he remained one of the key players of the club. Since 1999 Gattuso appeared in 335 matches and scored 9 goals for A.C. Milan.
