Gheorghe Bucur was born on April 8, 1980 in Bucharest, Romania. He currently plays as a striker for FC Kuban Krasnodar.
At the age of 9, Gheorghe started playing football at the youth ranks of Sportul Studenţesc. In 1998, the young footballer signed his first professional contract with the parent club. Bucur spent the first three years of his professional career in the second Romanian league and during this period scored 12 goals in 29 games, thereby helping his team to promote to the top-flight Divizia A in 2001. Overall, the striker netted 76 goals in 169 matches for Sportul Studenţesc during a seven-year spell at the club.
In 2005 Bucur was named the Romanian top league goalscorer the success not passing unnoticed by the scouts from the big-name Romanian clubs, and in 2006 the footballer signed for Politehnica Timişoara. There he spent five seasons and scored 52 goals in 124 appearances. With Timişoara Gheorghe Bucur became the runner-up in the Romanian Liga I in 2009 and twice reached the Cupa României final (in 2007 and 2009).
In winter 2010, Bucur signed a three-year contract with FC Kuban Krasnodar and soon made his debut for the new squad. It occurred on February 15, 2010 in a friendly match against FC Amkar Perm, when Gheorghe scored his first goal for the new team. On March 28, 2010 Gheorghe made his first official appearance for Kuban in the Russian First Division game against FC Avangard Kursk, his accurate assist for Kalimullin helping the team to open the score, and on May 10, the Romanian striker scored his first official goal for the club. It was in the ninth-round game against FC Irtysh Omsk when Gheorghe’s scoring in the 89th minute built a lead for his team and let it gain the away win with the final 2-3 score on the scoreboard.
On February 9, 2005 Gheorghe Bucur made his debut for the Romania national football team in a friendly against Slovakia. On June 8, he featured in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Armenia and made a brace, thereby scoring his first international goals. The player also featured in 7 games of the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
