Glenn Whelan is a midfielder of Stoke City. He was born on 13 January 1984 in Dublin, Ireland.
In 2001 Glenn graduated from the academy of Cherry Orchard and penned a contract with Manchester City. After becoming a player of a top-flight club, Whelan began to train with the main team, where he gleaned experience from older and more football-wise teammates. The player spent two years with ‘The Citizens’ and went on loan to Bury, where he got his first performing practice after making 13 appearances.
In 2004 Glen attracted the attention of Sheffield Wednesday. Despite the club performed in lower division, Whelan decided to take an opportunity to get constant playing practice, which was promised to him by the management. The footballer sealed a four-year deal and became a part of the starting squad, where he performed regularly. Glen featured in 142 matches and netted 13 goals during his spell, thus becoming one of the most efficient players of the club.
In 2008 Whelan transferred to Stoke City, where he continued his successful performance. At first the midfielder did not make more appearances for ‘The Potters’ than for his previous club, but he soon managed to gain confidence of the head coach, who started to let him on the field with the starting eleven for every match. From 2008 till 2012, Glen took part in 132 games and found the net five times for Stoke City.
Whelan’s first international experience came with the invitation to the Republic of Ireland national U-21 team, where he made 14 appearances and contributed two goals. In 2007 the footballer took part in one match of the Republic of Ireland B. From 2008, Glen was capped for 44 games and went on to net twice for the full national squad.
