Granit Xhaka is a Swiss footballer, born on 27 September 1992 in Gnjilane, Kosovo (former Yugoslavia).
Granit’s youth career began at Concordia Basel and then in 2003 he joined Basel youth team. Four years later Xhaka was capped for the U-21 team where he scored in every third match, which helped him to become an undisputed starter for the club. From 2008 to 2010 Granit appeared in 37 matches and netted 11 goals for the U-21 squad.
The footballer made his first team debut on 28 June 2010 in the 3rd qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League in the match against Debreceni VSC. Granit delivered the 2nd goal in Basel’s 2-0 victory. He fired his debut Super League goal on 15 May 2011 in the game versus FC Thun. Xhaka claimed the Super League Championship title with Basel two times in a row (2011, 2012) and won the 2011/12 Swiss Cup with the club. On 18 May 2012 Borussia Mönchengladbach reached an agreement with Basel for the acquisition of the Swiss footballer. Granit signed a five-year contract with the club, running until 30 June 2017.
Granit debuted for Switzerland on 24 September 2008 in the U-17 World Cup in the match against Iceland. His team won the World Cup. In total, the footballer made more than 40 appearances for Switzerland at different youth levels. Xhaka opened his account with the senior squad on 4 June 2011 in the UEFA Euro 2012 qualifier against England. A few months later he scored his debut international goal against Luxembourg. All in all, Granit has made 7 appearances and netted 2 goals for the senior national team.
