Havard Nordtveit was born on 21 June 1990 in Vats, Norway. Nordtveit’s career started at the youth teams of SK Vats 94 and Skjold IL. In 2006 Havard moved to Haugesund, where he started his professional career.
In July 2007 the talented player was signed by Arsenal. He debuted on 14 July 2007 in a friendly match against Barnet. Nordtveit was honoured to wear captain’s armband of Arsenal’s second squad for the 2007/08 FA Premier Reserve League season. He was called up to the club’s first team for the final match of the season, but didn’t come off the bench. On 18 August 2008 Havard was sent on a six months loan spell to Salamanca. He took part in three club’s matches and moved to Lillestrom on the same conditions in March 2009. At the new club the footballer had more playing time and managed to appear in 17 games. On 28 July 2009 Nordtveit joined Nürnberg on a 1-year loan deal, and in a season was purchased by Borussia Mönchengladbach for £800 000. There he made 47 appearances with 2 goals during one and a half season and established himself as an undisputed starter for the club.
Havard was repeatedly called up to the Norway national youth teams of all levels, starting from the U-16 squad. He made his senior international debut on 7 June 2011 in a friendly game against Lithuania. The footballer delivered his first goal for the senior team on 29 February 2012. He has made 4 appearances for the main squad so far.
