Until he was 19 Heiko had already got some football experience in several youth teams such as SV Ellwangen, SV Aichstetten and FC Wangen based in the vicinity of his native town.
Karlsruher SC II from the third division became the first professional club for the young defender. There he was fielded only twice and then transferred to SV Sandhausen. In this club he had a sudden increase of efficiency and scored 7 in 24 games. Such results didn’t pass unheeded by VfB Stuttgart, which soon offered Heiko a contract Butscher accepted without pausing to think. And in 2003 he was already the footballer of this team, though he never managed to become a first-squad player here. In his first season for the reserve side he appeared 62 times and made 9 goals. This statistics let him to get to the Bundesliga first XI, though to reach this success he had to change the team.
VfL Bochum was the club which gave him this opportunity and after his first appearances Heiko proved that he is worthy of taking his own place among the first string players. His stability and efficiency became his hallmarks that helped him to arrange his future in SC Freiburg he joined in 2007. In Freiburg Butscher got the captain’s armband, and after his 5 seasons in the outfit his account numbered 125 games and 9 goals. But in the season 2010/2011 he suffered a knee injury that put paid to his career in this German club. For this very reason he was transferred to Eintracht Frankfurt and signed a one-year contract here.
In May 2013 Butscher returned to his former club Bochum.
