Hugo Viana is a midfielder of Al Ahli, UAE. He was born on 15 January 1983 in Barcelos, Portugal.
In 1990 Hugo started his youth career at the academy of Gil Vicente where he spent five years. In between 1995 and 2001, he played for Sporting CP and Gil Vicente again until he signed his first professional contract with Sporting. He played 26 games and kicked 1 goal in the 2001/2002 season. In 2002 Viana moved to England where he sealed a deal with Newcastle United. During the first two seasons Viana took part in 39 matches scoring twice for the English side. In the summer 2004 the footballer was loaned to Sporting where he spent the full 2004/2005 season kicking 6 goals in 32 matches.
In 2005 Viana penned a five-year contract with the Spanish outfit Valencia. During first two seasons he sometimes got into the starting XI; however he didn’t manage to win the trust of the coach that’s why Hugo was loaned in the summer 2007. The footballer spent the 2007/2008 season with Osasuna where he netted once in 9 games. In the 2009/2010 season Viana was on loan at Braga where he featured in 28 games and kicked 4 goals. One season was enough for the club to settle upon its plan for the footballer’s future. In the summer 2010 the midfielder signed for Braga where he played successfully until 2013. He was an important figure in this Portuguese side having featured in 79 matches. At the age of 30 Viana joined a club from UAE, Al Ahli.
From 2001 to 2004 Hugo Viana scored 3 goals in 22 matches for the Portugal U-21 national football team. Since 2001 he has been called-up more than 25 times to the Portugal national team and has kicked 1 goal (as of August 2012).
