In 2007 Ignazio’s loan spell ended, as did the contract with Milan, and he became a free agent. Empoli F.C. seized the opportunity and acquired Abate for 900 thousand euros. In 2008 Ignazio continued his career at Torino F.C., and appeared in 25 games.
In 2009 A.C. Milan reclaimed Abate and put him in the team roster. Ignazio was eager to play for his alma mater and a top Italian club. After slow start in debut matches, Abate was promoted to a regular right back by Milan head coach. To date, Abate has made over 100 appearances for the club.
From 2004 to 2009 Ignazio Abate made 21 appearances for the Italian U-18 and U-21 teams, in which he scored 2 goals. He won the 2008 Toulon Tournament and completed the Olympic national team, with 4 games and 1 goal scored. Starting from 2011 Ignazio is a part of the Italian national football team.
