Igor Akinfeev is a goalkeeper who captains CSKA Moscow. He was born on 8 April 1986 in Vidnoye, Soviet Union.
Igor took up playing football at the age of four and trained at CSKA football school from 1991 to 2002. He made his first-team debut in a match against Krylia Sovetov Samara when he was only 17 years old. It was a sink-or-swim match for the inexperienced Akinfeev, but he still managed to shortcut a penalty, helping his team to secure a 2-0 victory.
In 2003 he was officially promoted to the first team. A year later, Akinfeev was selected for the Russian Euro 2004 team. In 2005 he picked up a UEFA Cup winners’ medal. In 2005 Akinfeev was named the footballer of the year in the Russian Premier League. During his 2003-2012 spell at CSKA Moscow Akinfeev clocked up over 230 appearances.
On 28 April 2004 Igor Akinfeev celebrated his international debut for Russia in a friendly against Norway, when he was only 18 years old. He was selected for the Russian Euro 2004 team as the third choice goalie. In 2005 he became a first-choice goalkeeper. On 6 May 2007 his progress was checked by a knee injury, which ruled him out for several months. In 2009 Igor was called up to the Russian Euro 2008 squad. Thanks to his shot-stopping abilities, the team finished third. He was also called up to the Russian Euro 2012 squad. From 2004 to 2012 Akinfeev won over 50 international caps for the Russia national football team.
