Javier Varas Herrera (commonly known as Javi) plays as a goalkeeper for FC Sevilla.
The footballer received his education in Andalusia where he played for such amateur clubs as Nervión and Pablo Blanco. When he turned 23 he was accepted to Sevilla football academy where he had to play for their reserve team Sevilla Atletico. Javi spent 13 games in the Segunda B division during the season 2006/07 and his team went through to the Segunda A. After that Varas was promoted to the main squad. When David Cobeño left the club, Javi was set to be the second to Andres Palop.
Javi made his debut in 2009 in a 1-0 win against Numancia. The team delivered a lovely display while he temporarily was the main keeper (Palop had frequent injuries) although they had only 1 win in 4 games. Varas got more playing time in the season 2010/11 becoming the main goalkeeper of the club on a permanent basis. He helped his team qualify for the Europa League.
It’s owing to Javi that the team played in a sensational draw against Barcelona at Camp Nou in the 8th tour (22.10.2011). He managed to save a penalty shot from Lionel Messi and then he cleared the ball from Messi’s free kick. He made 8 saves during that match.
Varas was loaned to struggling Celta for the season 2012/2013.
