Joan Capdevila i Méndez plays for RCD Espanyol as a left defender or a winger. He was born in 1978 in Tàrrega, Spain and began his playing career at Tárrega CF after that he joined Real Club Deportivo Español B and then the first team. Capdevila made his first appearance for thesenior team in a 2-2 draw against Athletic Bilbao. The 1999/2000 season he spent with Atlético Madrid and then he switched to Deportivo de La Coruña, where he competed with Enrique Romero at first and then he became a regular started. He played for the club until 2007 when he joined Villarreal CF. Joan Capdevila signed a three-year deal and during his spell at the club he hardly missed several league matches.
In July 2011, he moved to Portugal where he joined S.L. Benfica. Capdevila debuted in a 3-1 Primera Liga win against C.D. Feirense. During that season he wasn’t used very often because Emerson was the first-choice.
At the end of July 2012 Joan signed for RCD Espanyol, where he used to play at the start of his career.
Capdevila represented the national team at U-21, U-23 and senior levels. He also was a part of the Catalonia team. In the 2010 FIFA World Cup he was called up in the starting line-up and helped the team to win the major championship.
