João Gonçalves was a Portuguese defender. He was born on 18 January 1988 in Amadora, Portugal.
In 1996 the young footballer came to a try-out to the Sporting academy. The Lisbon club, which plays in the Primeira Liga, invited Gonçalves to join the academy, because he showed excellent results in the exhibition match. From 1996 João started to play for the youth team of his age, and as the footballer grew up he moved to other youth squads of the club. During eleven years Gonçalves was a product of the Sporting academy where he finally prepared to start his professional career.
In the summer 2007 João was offered to move to the main team and to sign a professional contract. The defender accepted the offer without hesitations sealing a deal with the Lisbon club. In the summer of the same year João was sent on loan to Olivais Moscavide where he could gain playing experience for the first time. The 2007/2008 season was quite a success for Gonçalves because the head coach of his temporary team included him in the starting eleven in 29 matches where he could kick 4 goals.
In the summer 2008, when the defender returned to Sporting, Olhanense expressed a wish to loan him. From 2008 to 2012 Gonçalves played for Olhanense. During that period João made 66 appearances for his temporary team. In 2012 he was loaned to Vitória de Guimarães.
Unfortunately, the defender was forced to retire in 2013 following recurrent knee issues.
From 2009 to 2010 João Gonçalves gained 10 caps for the Portugal U-21 national team.
