Matip’s career took off when he was three. He joined SC Weitmar 45 and played there before moving to the VfL Bochum academy. At the age of nine Joël was noticed by Schalke 04 and became a part of its youth team.
In 2009/2010 then head coach of the Gelsenkirchen side club Felix Magath offered Matip to join the main team and the footballer took part in his first serious match on 7 November 2009. His team confronted Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena and Joël made his début unforgettable by netting a surprise equalizer.
