Johan Elmander was born on May 27, 1981 in Alingsås, Sweden. He started playing football at such clubs as Örgryte IS and Holmalunds IF and at the age of 18 was invited to the second team of Feyenoord by the boardroom of the club. He never broke into the first string of the Rotterdam club and in 2002 moved to Djurgården (Sweden) on loan. Being part of the squad the midfielder won Allsvenskan (The All-Swedish) in 2003 and Svenska Cupen (The Swedish Cup) in 2002. The following year, in 2003, the footballer was loaned to the Dutch club NAC Breda.
In 2004 Johan Elmander signed up with Brøndby IF (Denmark), and soon became one of the key players in the forward line. In the 2004/2005 season his team won champion title in the Danish Superliga and the Danish Cup. Johan Elmander was also announced the club’s Player of the Year by the fans.
The footballer’s successful performance for Brøndby IF and the national team drew the attention of a number of biggest European clubs and after the 2006 FIFA World Cup Johan Elmander signed a 4-year contract with the French Toulouse FC. His results in the season were very impressive: his 11 goals helped Toulouse FC finish in the third place of the French League and secure a place in the qualifying matches of UEFA Champions League.
In 2008 Johan Elmander was bought by an English club Bolton Wanderers FC and in May 2011 he was transferred to Galatasaray (Turkey). After two years with the Turkish club Elmander was loaned to Norwich City, thus, returning to the Premier League.
In 2014 Elmander penned a permanent deal with Brondby.
