The player’s football training started in his hometown. Mensah left the country when he was a teenager. He moved to Italy to join FC Bologna; however he was in poor form at that time, so he was immediately released on loan to the Swiss club Bellinzona. John was often criticized for the shortage of speed, but he could get on well with his teammates like nobody else.
The next 2001 season Mensah transferred to Genoa, Serie B; however he left the new team already in a season, transferring to Chievo. In two seasons he appeared in 13 matches for this club. Later he moved to Modena, played six games for it and turned back to the previous club. 2005 the player transferred to Cremonese, where he appeared in 14 matches.
In Janury 2006 Mensah started playing for Rennes as the club needed a new defender (Abdeslam Ouaddou had been badly injured). A contract with the French club was signed in April.
In the summer of 2008 he was acquired by Lyon. The footballer signed a five-year contract with the club. At the turn of August the player joined the English Sunderland on loan, where he first appeared on 15 September as a substitute against Hall City. Ten days later his first goal was scored, however it was disallowed for a foul on the goalkeeper of the ‘Blues’. So the next first goal was scored by Mensah on 19 December in the match against Manchester City. In the 2010/11 season the football player joined Sunderland on loan.
In 2012 he broke his contract with Lyon and spent half a year as a free agent. Afterwards he signed for Rennes again. After one season Mensah was released from the club.
