Jon Jönsson is a defender who currently plays for Elfsborg. He was born on July 8, 1983 in Hässleholm, Sweden. At the beginning of his senior career Jon played the role of an attacking midfielder, later becoming a central defender.
Jon began his junior career when he joined Hässleholm at the age of 15. His talent was noticed by Tottenham Hotspur, and the youngster moved to London. However, Jönsson penned his first professional contract with the Swedish club Malmö in 2001. From 2001 to 2006 he registered 59 appearances and scored 3 goals for Malmö. In 2005 Jon moved to Landskrona BoIS on loan, where he featured in 21 matches. In 2006 Jönsson was voted as the best central defender in Allsvenskan.
In the summer of 2006 Jönsson completed a move to Elfsborg. During his 2006–2007 spell at Elfsborg he participated in 26 matches and netted 5 goals. In 2007 the defender switched to the French club Toulouse. He lacked playing time at the club and decided to leave Toulouse for Brøndby in 2008. During his 2008-2010 stay at the club Jönsson took part in 24 games. In 2010 the footballer joined his former side Elfsborg, signing 4.5-year contract with the club.
In 2002 Jon Jönsson debuted for the Sweden U21 team. From 2002 to 2005 he made 27 appearances and scored 5 goals for the squad.
